Brazilian Walnut, also known as Ipe, or Lapacho, grows primarily in Brazil. Other than hardwood flooring, it’s used to make outdoor decking, veneer surfacing, railroad ties, and for heavy construction, due to its amazing durability and strength.

Brazilian Walnut is a hardy wood, one of the hardiest. It ranks at the top of the Janka Hardness Scale with a score of 3680. That’s more than two times the score of the industry standard Red Oak (1290), making Brazilian Walnut (Ipe) likely the most durable option out there.

This means with Brazilian Walnut, high traffic areas of your home can stand a chance. There’s a greater resistance to denting and daily wear and tear than other hardwoods ranked lower on the scale.

Remember, however, that no wood is totally resistant to damage and needs to be cared for properly to last.

Also, Brazilian Walnut, like other exotic woods, is rich in character. The tones can vary from an olive brown to near black, changing with age and exposure to sunlight.
Light brown striping can also appear creating a noted contrast.
